Bike Commuting

Bicycling to VCH sites

Cycling is often the fastest way of getting around especially in more urban areas of Greater Vancouver. It is also a healthful and enjoyable way to travel. TransLink is committed to making cycling a realistic travel option by providing bike access on transit and bike storage at various sites.

VGH and UBCH

VGH and UBCH both have secure bike cages. These cages are free, but you will need an access card.  Contact the Transportation Facilitator at 604-875-4111, extension 54118. The cages at VGH are located directly underneath the entrance to the Pattison Pavilion, and on the first level of the 12th avenue parkade. At UBC, the cage is located across from urgent care. Please note that the bike cages have limited space and may be full at times.  If your site does not have secure bike cages, contact us for advice on how to put together a proposal for one.

VGH Cycling Centre

VGH is please to have an indoor cycling centre for bike commuters for VCH staff and students.
Information for the cycling centre is available online at https://bcgreencare.ca/vgh-cycling-centre

Bike training for commuters

'On-Road' bike training for nervous riders is available through the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC). This is a one day course and is free.  Call 604-734-1385 for more details.

Bikes On Transit

You can take your bike on SkyTrain, except in the peak direction during weekday rush hours, 7-9am and 4-6pm.

Note: On recently-delivered buses in the Coast Mountain Bus Company fleet, bicycles will not be carried after daylight hours. This is due to a design issue, in which the headlights are obscured when a bicycle is placed on the rack. The manufacturer is currently addressing this problem.
Cost: There is no additional charge to take your bike on SkyTrain, SeaBus or the bus. The West Coast Express has an additional charge of $1/day or $15/month.
Capacity: Capacity for bikes varies across modes and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Loading: Cyclists can load and unload at all regular stops across the system.
Restrictions: Transit Attendants and Security staff may restrict the passage of bicycles at any time when loading conditions make it unsafe.

Bike lockers are a great option for regular commuters.  The lockers are available to rent for $30 for a three-month period, plus a refundable key deposit.
